The weakened economy has affected many segments of society, and a new survey suggests that it may have taken a bite out of the Tooth Fairy as well.

In the Original Tooth Fairy Poll conducted annually by Delta Dental, 1,355 parents across the country said the average amount left for a tooth is $2.10, down from $2.52 in 2010, according to the survey.

Do You Love Liberty Enough to Die for It?

They Thought They Were Free:  the Germans, 1933-45 by Milton Sanford Mayer

They [the Germans] hate Communism--under that name--but they do not love what we call liberty enough to die for it.  If they did, they would have died for it against Hitler.

How much do you love liberty?  Do you love it enough to die for it?

Religious Freedom Rally

I received this in an email from Missouri Family Network:

Religious Freedom Rally

On Tuesday, March 27, 2012, Missouri Family Network, several organizations and religious leaders, including the Missouri Baptist Convention, Missouri Catholic Conference, and other religious denominations and  pro-life advocacy groups, including Missouri Right to Life, Americans United for Life, and others, will sponsor a legislative action day and rally to protest the new mandate of the US Department of Health and Human Services that forces employers, including religious institutions to provide coverage for abortion drugs, sterilization and contraceptives.  We will call on Congress to pass S. 1467, sponsored by Sen. Roy Blunt and H.R. 1179 cosponsored by U.S. Representatives Todd Akin, Vicky Hartzler, Sam Graves, Billy Long and Blaine Luetkemeyer.

The rally will also support the passage of the Missouri State Legislation, SB 749 which is sponsored by State Senator John Lamping.  This bill would prohibit the government from forcing religious institutions to offer health coverage for abortion drugs, sterilization or contraceptives.  It would also make sure that individuals do not have to buy health plans that cover such items.  (Current State law bans abortion coverage except as an individually purchased rider to a health care plan.)

Join Us on Tuesday, March 27th to Rally for Religious Freedom!  Wear Red For Life!

America,--no, not America!

. . .even now the outside world does not realize how surprised we non-Nazis were in 1933.  When mass dictatorship occurred in Russia, and then in Italy, we said to one another, 'That is what happens in backward countries.  We are fortunate, for all our troubles, that it cannot happen here.'  But it did, worse even than elsewhere, and I think that all the explanations leave some mystery.  When I think of it all, I still say, with unbelief, 'Germany--no, not Germany.'

I continue to say with unbelief, "America,--no, not America!"

The Intimidation of Nazism

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]Commentarii de Bello Gallico, an account writt...[/caption]

I'm currently reading They Thought They Were Free:  the Germans, 1933-45.  The below paragraph shows the effects of a dictatorship and Nazism on the people.  It sheds light on what the people were thinking and how they were feeling in their daily lives.  They weren't given a list of do's and don'ts or a handbook of rules and regulations.  Instead, they were intimidated into being overly cautious.  Imagine feeling as if you're walking on eggshells 24/7.

The remarks below are from a German high school teacher who was asked if Julius Caesar's works were banned in the schools.

Not that I remember.  But that is not the way it was.  Everything was not regulated specifically, ever.  It was not like that at all.  Choices were left to the teacher's discretion, within the 'German spirit.'  That was all that was necessary; the teacher had only to be discreet.  It he himself wondered at all whether anyone would object to a given book, he would be wise not to use it.  This was a much more powerful form of intimidation, you see, than any fixed list of acceptable or unacceptable writings.  The way it was done was, from the point of view of the regime, remarkably clever and effective.  The teacher had to make the choices and risk the consequences; this made him all the more cautious.
