Self Checkout at the Library

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="260" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]English: Ballard Carnegie Library checkout des...[/caption]

I made a trip to the library last week.  It had been a while since I had actually been inside.  I actually use the library quite a bit; but with today's technology, I can reserve whatever I need and let Dh pick it up for me.  That has been my habit for quite some time.

Well, I was in for a surprise.  First of all, the holds have been placed in a public area so that you can simply go in and pick them up without asking for them.  Second of all, they now have self checkout--just like at the store.

Once I picked my items up, I decided to give the self checkout a whirl.  The first time, the librarian helped me with it.  Then, Cinderella decided she needed a few more books, so I got to go solo.

It's simple enough, but there's a lot of button pushing on a touch screen just to check out a few books.  First, you have to push a button to tell the computer that you want to check out a book.  Then, you scan your card.  Then, you have to input your password and push the "next" button.  Once you scan your books, you have to push the "next" button again.  Then it asks you if you want a printed receipt or email receipt, then the "next" button again.  Like I said, there's lots of button pushing involved.

Beings that the library is a public place, and one that children love; all I could think about was how many snotty-nosed, buger-picking kids had touched the screen before I had.  Don't get me wrong, I think the self checkout is a good thing.  I only question the cleanliness of a touch screen used by hundreds of people a day.  I realize that my head is probably going overboard on this one.  I'm sure I'll use the self checkout again if I have the opportunity.  And, that little voice in the back of my head will be saying, "Is this sanitary?"

School Mascot Too Derogatory

This is political correctness at its best.  After the students voted and chose 'Cougars' as the mascot, the superintendant received numerous emails and phone calls from the parents complaining that the word 'cougar' had become a derogatory term.  This ended up in the hands of the school board who made the decision to go with the 'Chargers' as the mascot. 'Cougars' Mascot Deemed Too Derogatory - Education News Story - KMBC Kansas City

The Corner Canyon High School in Draper, Utah, needed to choose a mascot and after 23 percent of students who voted decided they wanted to be the Corner Canyon Cougars. Falcons, Raptors and Diamondbacks were the other choices on the ballot.

But that didn't sit well with parents who called in and complained that "Cougar" was a derogatory word because of how it's made its way into our vocabulary for older women who like to date younger men.

Gingrich Newters CNN's John King

CNN's John King had the brazenness to start Thursday night's debate by asking Gingrich about his ex-wife's accusations that Newt came to her and asked her to participate in an "open marriage."

When asked to respond, Newt said,

I think the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media makes it harder to govern this country, harder to attract decent people to run for public office, and I am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate with a topic like that.

Newt continued, received a thundering applause, and a standing ovation.  King tried to pass the blame on to ABC, but Newt wouldn't allow it.  Newt finally ended his remarks with,

I am frankly astounded that CNN would take trash like that and use it to open a presidential debate."

2012 Most Painful Year at Pump

In an earlier post, I reported that gas could hit as high as $4 a gallon this summer in the midwest.  CBS is now reporting that this may be the most painful year at the pump and that gas prices may hit as high as $5 a gallon in Chicago by Memorial Day.  I have also heard reports on the radio saying that if Iran is successful in closing the Strait of Hormuz, that gas may hit $20 a gallon. $20 a gallon gas is something that I cannot fathom.  Very few people are in a situation where they can walk to the store and to work.  Still, the price of everything would skyrocket.  We have so many things, like plastic, that are made from petroleum.  Then, there's the fact that all of these things are brought to the store via truck.  $20 a gallon gas would not only cripple transportation, but also make essential items for daily living unobtainable for many people.  I truly cannot imagine what this would do to our country.  However, necessity is the mother of invention; and it is times such as these that inventors and entrepreneurs can and will make a difference. Gas Outlook: ‘Most Painful Year At Pump Ever’ « CBS Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — Gasoline prices could approach $5 a gallon by Memorial Day and stay a record levels for much of the summer, according to a forecast by GasBuddy.com. Gas prices always spike in the summer, but the 2012 Gasbuddy.com Price Outlook predicts this summer will break records. “It looks like it might be the most painful year at the pump that we have ever seen,” senior analyst Patrick DeHaan said.

Maine: More Welfare Recipients Than Tax Payers

How many other states are experiencing this same phenomenon? Welfare recipients outnumber taxpayers   - Editorials - Charleston Daily Mail - West Virginia News and Sports -

Paul LePage, the Republican governor of Maine, mentioned an uncomfortable truth in a radio address this month: Maine has more welfare recipients than income tax payers. Democrats challenged the accuracy of this assertion. The Bangor Daily News fact-checked LePage and discovered that 445,074 Mainers paid state income tax,  while 453,194 received some sort of state aid. In Maine, Medicaid, welfare, food stamps and subsidies for education have a combined enrollment of 660,000. Adjusting for overlap reduces the number to 453,194 - or 8,120 more people on state assistance than there are state income taxpayers in Maine.

DHS Monitoring Drudge Report and Social Media

Naturally, the big question we all want answered is, "Why?" Homeland Security Is Monitoring The Drudge Report, The New York Times - Technology - The Atlantic Wire

It's unclear exactly why, but the Department of Homeland has been operating a "Social Networking/Media Capability" program to monitor the top blogs, forums and social networks online for at least the past 18 months. Based on a privacy compliance review from last November recently obtained by Reuters, the purpose of the project is to "collect information used in providing situational awareness and establishing a common operating picture." Whatever that means. Either way, the list of sites reported by Reuters reveals in a Wednesday afternoon exclusive is pretty intriguing:

U.S. Supreme Court Upholds Constitution

At a time when it's obvious that our president has no regard for the U.S. Constitution, this is a breath of fresh air: Supreme Court Decision in Hosanna-Tabor a Major Win for Religious Freedom

Today the U.S. Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision that resoundingly affirms the freedom of religious groups to choose their own ministers. Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. EEOC involved a lawsuit brought by an employee against a church-operated school. The employee alleged that her employment was terminated in violation of a federal anti-discrimination law. The question in this case was “whether the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses of the First Amendment bar such an action when the employer is a religious group and the employee is one of the group’s ministers.” In an opinion authored by Chief Justice Roberts, the Court answered in the affirmative, stating that “[b]oth Religion Clauses bar the government from interfering with the decision of a religious group to fire one of its ministers.”

Busyness: The Thief of Family Memories | Homeschool-Articles.com

We all have seasons in which we bite of too much and find ourselves in the midst of busyness.  Do we recognize it and realize that we're robbing our family, or are we like a fish that doesn't know it's wet?

You have probably heard the statement that nobody gets to the end of their life and says, "I sure wish I had spent more time at work" or "I should have spent more time watching television" or "I wish I had made more money."  What do people say?  They say, "I wish I had spent more time with my loved ones." Even the respected evangelist Billy Graham said that if he could do it over again, he would spend more time with his family. But this problem is not unique to busy people like Dr. Graham.  Most Americans can identify with this problem; it is a sign of the times.  The problem is we can't see it.

Doug Phillips, president of Vision Forum asks this question, "Does a fish know that it is wet?"  We answer, "Of course not.  The fish has always lived in water.  It is all the fish has ever known." This is a very good analogy of our condition; we don't realize that we are soaking wet with busyness, with keeping up with the Jones, with being consumed by things that have little long term value, and our relationships with others suffer.

For the parent, what has the greatest value, and what will bring us the best memories?  Training up our children has great value; showing them how to live can change the world.  Deuteronomy 6:7 tells this to fathers, "You shall teach them (God's words) diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up." I realized that in all my busyness, and in all our activities, I could not obey this command.

Requiring a High School Diploma May Be Discriminatory Says EEOC

Requiring a high school diploma as a condition of employment for some jobs could land you in trouble with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

An "informal discussion letter" just posted to the EEOC's website says that under certain circumstances, requiring a diploma may run afoul of the Americans with Disabilities Act. If the requirement screens out persons unable to earn a diploma because of a bonafide disability, the employer has to justify the requirement as job-related and consistent with business necessity.

Doing that for some jobs isn't going to be easy. Employers almost as a matter of routine include at least a high school degree requirement in every job posting, including for janitors and cleaners. The U.S. Labor Department, however, says, "Most building cleaning workers, except supervisors, do not need any formal education and mainly learn their skills on the job or in informal training sessions sponsored by their employers."

Most, if not all, states have a law as far as compulsory school attendance.  In my state, compulsory attendance is from the ages of 6 to 17.  It's sad to think that children are required to be in school these 11 years and are not earning a high school diploma in that time.  High school is not that hard, and the millions of people that are continuing on to get college degrees are proof of that.

I don't blame employers for wanting to have standards in who they hire.  Requiring a high school diploma is about as low as you can get. If an applicant has a high school diploma, it's assumed that he/she has a certain level of education.  It assumes that you have received a general education that will enable you to function in society.  (I understand that there are exceptions to all the rules.)

If a high school diploma isn't required then what is?  When an employer has one job opening and hundreds of applicants, the screening process has to start somewhere.  Requiring a high school diploma is a reasonable start.

Tortured Child Bride, 15, Rescued From Toilet Prison After Husband's Family Mutilated Her For Refusing To Work As Prostitute - Atlas Shrugs

No one should be surprised by this. It's in the quran. "Good women are obedient....As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them." -- quran 4:34

And the child marriage is in imitation of the prophet Moe's consummation of his marriage to Aisha when he was 54 and she was nine.

So women are being treated as commodities in Afghanistan? And what else is new?

The tortured child bride: Horrific ordeal of Afghan girl, 15, rescued from toilet prison after husband's family mutilated her for refusing to work as a prostitute Daily Mail (hat tip Sophie)

A teenage Afghan girl was brutally tortured, beaten and locked in a toilet by her husband's family for five months after she refused to become a prostitute, it emerged today.

Sahar Gul, 15, was in critical condition when she was rescued from a house in northern Baghlan province last week, after her neighbours reported hearing Miss Gul crying and moaning in pain.

According to police in Baghlan, her in-laws pulled out her nails and hair, and locked her in a dark basement bathroom for about five months, with barely enough food and water to survive.
