“I’m Not Homeschooled Yet”

Painting: Cinderella at the Kitchen Fire, by T...

Image via Wikipedia

Cinderella and I went to the hospital today to visit a friend.  She insisted on taking her backpack which contained one thing:  her sippy cup.

When we left, we were on the elevator with another man.  He looked at Cinderella and said, "Did you go to school today?  You have your backpack on."

Cinderella replied with complete confidence, "No, I'm only 3.  I'm not homeschooled yet."

Black Friday 2011

How was your Black Friday? I stayed home and snuggled up with Cinderella and then spent the rest of the day getting caught up on things that didn't get done during the week. We saw people camped out in front of the stores on Thanksgiving morning. Did you get up early and wait in line or camp out? What was the best deal you found?

Let us Exalt His Name Together

Scroll of the Psalms

Image via Wikipedia

My you all have a blessed Thanksgiving Day.  We are often quick to whine and complain, but as Americans, we live in the most prosperous country in the world.  If I am to be poor anywhere, I pray that it be in the great USA.

I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul will make its boast in the LORD; The humble will hear it and rejoice. O magnify the LORD with me, And let us exalt His name together. - Psalm 34:1-3 NASB

Following is a reminder of how great God is, how blessed we are, and how thankful we should be.

Psalm 65:

[1] For the choir director. A Psalm of David. A Song. There will be silence before You, and praise in Zion, O God, And to You the vow will be performed.

[2] O You who hear prayer, To You all men come.

[3] Iniquities prevail against me; As for our transgressions, You forgive them.

[4] How blessed is the one whom You choose and bring near to You To dwell in Your courts. We will be satisfied with the goodness of Your house, Your holy temple.

[5] By awesome deeds You answer us in righteousness, O God of our salvation, You who are the trust of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest sea;

[6] Who establishes the mountains by His strength, Being girded with might;

[7] Who stills the roaring of the seas, The roaring of their waves, And the tumult of the peoples.

[8] They who dwell in the ends of the earth stand in awe of Your signs; You make the dawn and the sunset shout for joy.

[9] You visit the earth and cause it to overflow; You greatly enrich it; The stream of God is full of water; You prepare their grain, for thus You prepare the earth.

[10] You water its furrows abundantly, You settle its ridges, You soften it with showers, You bless its growth.

[11] You have crowned the year with Your bounty, And Your paths drip with fatness.

[12] The pastures of the wilderness drip, And the hills gird themselves with rejoicing.

[13] The meadows are clothed with flocks And the valleys are covered with grain; They shout for joy, yes, they sing.

Also for your reading pleasure, a Thanksgiving story from about 1850.  (Grab a tissue.)  This is a great story for children and another reminder of how fortunate we are and how God provides our every need.

Cinderella:  Yes, without bread.

Me:  We're not having hamburgers for breakfast.

Cinderella:  Ok, then deer.

Me:  You want deer meat for breakfast?

Cinderella:  Yes.

Me:  We're out of deer meat.

Cinderella:  Can we go deer hunting?

Taiwan official pleads guilty, faces deportation - KCTV 5

The U.S. Attorney's Office said an envoy for the government of Taiwan pleaded guilty this morning to allegations that she abused her house help.

Hsien Hsein "Jacqueline" Liu will pay $80,044 in restitution, receive probation and will be deported immediately after a sentencing hearing. She remains in federal custody until then. A judge will need to finalize the deal but that is considered a formality and Liu should be deported by the end of the year.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Liu fraudulently obtained two Filipino servants for her home. The amount represents the pay the victims should have received for working up to 18 hours a day for nearly seven days a week.

The 64-year-old Liu lived in Overland Park, but worked in Kansas City for the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office. The office helps maintain close relations between the people of the United States and Taiwan.

Obama's New Christmas Tree Tax

What do you think of when you hear the words "Christmas tree?"  Do you think of a perfectly shaped tree with all the decorations?  Some new, some old, some handmade complete with icicles, tinsil, and lights.  There are plenty of other things you might associate with the tree or the decorating of the tree:  family, apple cidar, the fragrance of cinnamon and other favorite holiday dishes. According to Obama, the Christmas tree has a bad image.  Don't worry, our government is going to fix this problem that doesn't exist.  Obama has created a new Federal program whose sole purpose is to "strengthen the Christmas tree industry's position in the marketplace."  This is going to be accomplished by implementing a new 15-cent tax on fresh Christmas trees.  The revenue generated by this tax will go to the Board appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture to carry out the program. I'm wondering.  Is this tax just on Christmas trees or on holiday trees too?  Where is the ACLU on this one?  Is it constitutional for our government to tax something of a religious nature? This whole thing reeks of a 3-day old fish.  You know very well that most of the money collected will go to pay the salaries of the people that administer the program.  Then they'll decide the tax isn't enough and it will be increased year after year. Bahumbug! Source

All Shook Up

Just before 11:00 pm tonight I noticed that my chair was beginning to shake.  I could hear dishes rattling in the other room.  I looked around and I saw a plant and a lamp on a table across the room shaking.  For a split second I was scared to death.  Then I realized I had experienced my first earthquake!

Then I became excited.  The last earthquake that I remember some people feeling in this area was in April 2008.  I believe the epicenter was in Illinois somewhere.  I didn't feel it, but our daughter did.  I was nine months pregnant and right after the earthquake she decided to do a flip and went into a breach position.  Her doing a 180 in my stomach was quite an experience too!

With today's technology and instant news, I was able to find information on the quake right away:

[. . .]

The earthquake was centered only 39 miles away from the football game played between Kansas State and Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Ok.

Here's a video of the earthquake from ESPN. Watch as Kirk Herbstreit's eyes nearly pop out of his head.

Today marks the end of Daylight Saving Time.  So, don't forget to roll your clocks back an hour tonight before you go to bed.

This is also a good time to check those batteries in the smoke detectors.

Also, don't forget about your mattress:  fall/flip, spring/spin.

Container Gardening Experiment Gone Bad

We haven't done any gardening for years. This past spring the Boy Scouts were selling plants and flowers, so we decided to buy some and plant a few tomato plants in 5 gallon buckets on our deck.  This was our experiment with container gardening.

We had one tomato left on one of our plants, and I woke up one morning to see this:

PIC00470

What is that on the roof of our shed?

PIC00469

It's our last tomato—green and half-eaten by a squirrel!

Our experiment didn't work very well.  At least, not for us.  The squirrels loved them.  As soon as they started to turn red they would disappear, or I would find it half eaten on the railing of the deck.  We managed to get one tomato out of the whole bunch!

The other day Cinderella referred to DH as my boyfriend.

Me:  No, your dad and I are married.

Cinderella:  Just like C and J are married?

Me:  Yes.

Cinderella:  I will be married one day.

Me:  OK.

Cinderella:  But first I have to dance with my prince.

Sometimes this girl has wisdom far beyond her years.
