"It is very important to us to tax guns because we know that guns are the sources of the incredible violence we have in our neighborhoods," Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle told a news conference. She said 29 percent of guns used in crimes in Chicago were purchased legally in suburban Cook County.
Guns are not a source of violence, people are. I can assure you that you will find people as the source of every violent act, not guns. If 29% of guns used in crimes were purchased legally, it would make much more sense to focus on the 71% of guns that were purchased illegally. The illegally purchased guns seems to be the problem here.
"We are a city with more guns than computers in many neighborhoods and that's unacceptable," Pfleger said.
Is this really a bad thing? Taxing guns is only going to deter the law-abiding citizen. Those that purchase guns illegally aren't going to be concerned about paying a tax on their purchase. Making it more difficult for a law-abiding citizen to purchase a gun is not going to deter crime. If anything, crime will increase because it has less competition.
